Dark Dungeon is an audio-first dungeon crawler designed to be completed without relying on visual information.

You wake up inside a completely dark, procedurally generated maze. There are no torches and no visual landmarks. To escape, you must explore the surrounding tiles through sound, avoid hidden traps, find a key and remember your route back to the exit.

Every movement has a cost. Careful exploration and spatial memory are more valuable than speed.

How to play

Use the arrow keys to probe the tile next to you before moving. Each sound identifies what is in that direction: an open path, a wall, a trap, the key or the exit.

Movement is performed with W, A, S and D. Moving always counts as a step, even when walking into a wall.

Find the key, avoid the traps and return to the exit to complete the dungeon.

Controls

  • W / A / S / D: Move.
  • Arrow keys: Probe an adjacent tile without moving.
  • F: Repeat the instructions and controls.
  • R: Reset the level and generate a new dungeon.
  • Q: Show or hide the development map.

Features

  • Designed to be played through audio and spatial memory.
  • Procedurally generated dungeon layouts.
  • Consistent sound feedback for every relevant interaction.
  • Hidden traps that reward cautious exploration.
  • Movement counter and optimal-route calculation.
  • Short and highly replayable sessions.
  • Optional visual debug map for development and testing.

Accessibility

Headphones are strongly recommended.

The game uses distinct audio feedback for movement, walls, open paths, traps, the key and the exit. The instructions can be repeated at any time through both audio and text.

Dark Dungeon is an experimental accessibility-focused student prototype.
